A publication for people who take their work seriously

Cadence is an independent digital publication about careers, productivity, and the craft of doing good work — written by people who have actually done it.

Why we started

Cadence began in 2021 with a small frustration that wouldn't go away. Our founder, Maya Okonkwo, had spent fourteen years building and running operations teams, and she kept noticing that the career advice she read online was either recycled from somewhere else or written by people who had never managed anyone, hired anyone, or shipped anything. It was confident, generic, and quietly useless.

So we built the publication we wished existed: practical, honest, and written only by people with real experience of the thing they're writing about. No hot takes, no hustle, no fifteen-step morning routines. Just clear, tested guidance for the ordinary, important problems of working life — asking for a promotion, running a first team, staying focused, working well from a spare bedroom three time zones from your colleagues.

Our mission

To help professionals do better work and build careers that can last — by publishing advice that is practical, trustworthy, and actually usable the same week you read it. We measure ourselves by one question: did this help someone do their job a little better?

What we believe about work

A good career is built slowly, through skill and judgement, not shortcuts. Most real progress comes from getting a little better at unglamorous things — writing a clear email, running a useful meeting, giving feedback someone can use. We'd rather help you with those than sell you a transformation. We also believe sustainable beats heroic: the cadence you can keep for years matters more than the sprint you can manage for a month. It's why we're called what we're called.

How we're funded

Cadence is independent and reader-supported. We are not owned by a larger media group and we don't take money to publish or promote anything. We keep the lights on through our free weekly newsletter and a small number of clearly labelled partnerships that never influence our editorial coverage. If we ever recommend a tool or a book, it's because we'd recommend it to a friend — and we'll tell you plainly if a link is affiliated.

Who makes Cadence

We're a small, distributed team across Toronto, London, Edinburgh, Austin, and Stockholm. Every article is written by a named author with relevant experience and reviewed by an editor before it's published. You can read about each of them on our authors page, and you can see exactly how we work in our editorial guidelines.

In short

An independent publication, written by experienced practitioners, edited carefully, funded by readers — focused on helping you do good work over a long career.
